Sixteenth rhythms

There are only four places a note can start inside one beat. Learn the four, and every sixteenth figure you will ever read becomes a question about which of them are occupied.

The beat has four places in it

Divide one beat into four equal parts and you get four slots. They have names, and the names do not change from figure to figure or from piece to piece.

Those four exist whether or not anything is played on them. That sentence is the entire lesson, and almost every sixteenth-note problem in a rehearsal is a student who does not believe it yet.

Slots, not sounds

e and a are places in time. They are not names for fast notes. A beat with one note in it still has an e, an & and an a going past — you simply did not play them.

Put a note on every slot and you have the figure everyone learns first.

The double beam is the notation telling you these are sixteenths: one beam means eighths, two means sixteenths. The beam also groups them, which is why a beat of sixteenths is drawn as one connected object rather than four separate notes — the beaming is doing you a favor by showing you where the beat is.

The same four slots, fewer notes

Now hold some of them longer. Nothing about the beat changes — the slots are still there, still in the same places, still counted the same way. What changes is which of them a note starts on.

Look at the beams across those three. The single beam runs the whole beat in each of them, and the second beam appears only over the notes that are actually sixteenths. Where a sixteenth stands alone, that second beam becomes a short stub pointing back toward the group it belongs to.

Read the beat, not the note

These three figures contain the same information in three arrangements. If you count all four slots every time and just decide which ones get attacked, you have learned all of them at once. If you memorize each as a shape, you have learned three things and the fourth will catch you out.

The dotted one, which everybody rushes

A dot adds half of the note's value again. A dotted eighth is therefore three slots long, which leaves exactly one slot for what follows.

This figure gets played wrong more than any other on the page, and almost always in the same direction: the short note arrives early, turning it into something closer to a triplet feel. The reason is that players count the shape rather than the slots. Count all four and the sixteenth has nowhere to go but a.

Its beaming tells you the same thing. The stub on the sixteenth points backward, toward the dotted eighth it belongs with — one beat, two notes, wildly uneven.

A rest is a slot you count and do not play

Everything above holds when a slot is silent. Swap any note for a rest of the same value and the counting does not change at all: you still say 1 e & a, and you simply do not attack the slots the rests are on.

Notice what the notation does with a lone sounding sixteenth. With nothing next to it to beam to, it grows flags instead — two of them, because two beams and two flags mean the same thing. Beams are what flags become when notes are grouped.

Silence is harder than sound, because it gives you nothing to hold onto. The common failure is coming back in early after a rest, which is the same disease as rushing the dotted figure: the player stopped counting slots and started waiting for a feeling.

Say the rest out loud

When a beat has rests in it, count the whole beat aloud and only play the slots that are written. Whispering the silent counts is not cheating — it is the skill, and it is what you will stop needing once the beat is internal.

How to get these

  1. Say all four slots out loud, always. Even in a beat with one note in it. The counting is the skill; the playing is what the counting produces.
  2. Slow enough to be boring. If you cannot say it under tempo, you cannot play it at tempo — you can only approximate it convincingly, which is a different thing that falls apart in a section.
  3. Learn the slot, not the shape. Ask "which slots start a note?" rather than "what does this look like?" There are four slots and a handful of figures; there are unlimited shapes.

Where you will use this

Every marching book, most concert snare writing, and the moment a part goes from eighths to sixteenths without warning. It is also the vocabulary underneath the rudiments — a single paradiddle is four slots with a sticking attached.

Turn the grid into timed attacks

Naming a figure is not the same as performing it. Use one unfamiliar two-beat phrase: count every slot once without playing, then play only the written attacks on a pad while the count continues.

  1. Keep the grid. Every beat still contains 1 e & a, including silent slots.
  2. Keep the pulse. The next beat must arrive on time; a correct first cell does not cover a compressed beat line.
  3. Place the attacks. Listen for whether each stroke lands on its spoken slot rather than merely in the right order.

Record four things separately

Record subdivision language, pulse across the beat line, attack placement, and support level. A student can succeed in one layer while another still needs instruction.

Let the error choose the next move

Evidence boundary: one correct phrase supports immediate performance under its tempo, surface, sticking and prompt conditions. It does not establish durable retention, every sixteenth grouping, ensemble transfer or performance at another tempo.

Check later: at the start of another rehearsal, before the poster or guide is visible, use a new rest-starting cell inside a two-beat phrase at a changed tempo or surface.

Why the lesson is built this way

These studies support design choices; they do not prove that this exact sixteenth-note lesson causes learning.
