Triplets & Duplets
Students can tell a triplet from the duple division next to it by sight and by count, and can say what the bracket and the number are actually claiming about the beat.
Review — Twenty minutes, for a room that has met this before and half remembers it.
Before the bell
Assumes students can already: Students can count and play the ordinary division of the beat steadily — two eighths per quarter, evenly. A triplet is defined against that division, so a student whose eighths are uneven has nothing to contrast it with.

One triplet on the board with its bracket and its 3. Ask what the 3 is counting and what it is counting against. The second half of that question is the one nobody has been asked before, and it is the whole idea.

Build one measure in Rhythm Repper with a triplet beat beside a plain eighth-note beat. Play it at a slow click. The beat is identical in both; only how many notes are packed into it moved. Because the app engraves the cells, nobody spends the block arguing about beaming.

Alternate beats — duple, triplet, duple, triplet — as a room over a click on the quarter. Slow. The failure is always the same: the click drifts to fit the notes rather than the notes fitting the click. Stop the moment it happens and restart under tempo.

In pairs over the click: one says the count for four bars of mixed duple and triplet beats while the other plays it, then swap. Saying it first is not a warm-up, it is the test — a student who cannot say it cannot reliably play it twice.

Collect it. A student can point at a triplet correctly and still believe the beat sped up, and that belief stays invisible until they write a count that either does or does not fill one beat. Nothing here is graded by an app, so this and what you heard in pairs is the whole record.

What the current evidence supports
- The two figures are visibly different on the page — three noteheads under a bracket against two, not three against three.
- The counts differ and both fill one beat. A student who writes the same count under both has drawn the difference without hearing it.
- The claim sentence says something about fitting into the beat. Any wording that means “three where two normally go” passes.
Why this measures the objective: Drawing and counting together is what makes this measure the objective rather than recognition. A student can point at a triplet on a page correctly and still believe the beat sped up, and that belief is invisible until they write a count that either does or does not still fill one beat.
Boundary: Evidence collected in this period describes immediate performance under the stated conditions. It does not establish durable retention or broad mastery.
Check later
Delayed check: At the start of a later rehearsal, use a brief changed example before review or prompting. Record whether the target is available with reduced support.
Reaching everybody
If they are not there yet
- Give them the bracket and the number already drawn and ask only for the count. The notation and the arithmetic are two demands.
- Keep the metronome on the beat, not the subdivision, for every attempt. The beat staying put is the whole claim and a metronome subdividing does the work for them.
If they are ready for a changed condition
- Ask what a duplet is doing in a compound bar — the same trick pointed the other way, and the one that shows the bracket is a general device rather than a triplet marking.
- Have them write a bar that alternates triplets and duple eighths on consecutive beats, then play it. Switching is much harder than either one alone.
Getting at the work
- The count may be spoken, tapped or written. A student who cannot play the figure can still be assessed on the claim, which is the reading half of the objective.
- Brackets and tuplet numerals are small; project them when the difference is being drawn.
If the room is not ready: Nothing in the shop drills this — Count It states no triplets and Stick Lab is a duple grid — so if the you-do block collapses there is no app to send them to. Fall back to the metronome and the two-figure switch as a whole-room exercise, which needs no materials you do not already have out.

What to look for
- Rushing the duple beats to match the triplets is the giveaway, and it is easier to hear than to see. It means the triplet is being felt as a speed rather than as a division of a beat that has not moved.
- Watch for a count that changes syllable system between the two — students who say “trip-le-t” then switch to numbers on the duple beat have two unconnected systems rather than one beat with two subdivisions.
- No app drills this topic, and the board does not grade. Rhythm Repper is here because it engraves correctly, which removes an argument from the room; it is not evidence of anything a student can do.
