Notes & rests
Five values, each one exactly half the one above it, and a matching rest for every note. Learn them as a ratio rather than a list and you never have to memorize the list.
Every note has a rest that matches it
A note tells you to play for a length of time. A rest tells you not to play, for the same lengths. They come in pairs, and the pairing is the fastest thing on this page to learn because there are only five of them.
Read the middle column first. A rest is not a gap in the music where nothing is happening — it is a written instruction lasting a stated amount of time, and it is counted exactly as carefully as a note.
Whole and half rests look almost identical
They are the same small rectangle. The difference is which side of the line it takes: a whole rest hangs below the line, a half rest sits on top of it. Everybody mixes these up once. The way to remember it is that the whole rest is heavier, so it hangs.
Each one is half the one above
The names are arbitrary. The arithmetic is not, and it is the whole system: every value is exactly half the length of the value above it, all the way down.
Which means you never need to remember how many eighths are in a half note. You can work it out in a second, and working it out is more reliable than remembering, because it keeps working on the values you have not met yet.
“Quarter of what?”
Of a whole note — not of a beat. The names describe fractions of a whole note, and in 4/4 a whole note happens to last the whole bar, which is where the names came from. Change the time signature and the fractions stay; what changes is which one gets called the beat. The Staff Road Map lesson is about that half of it.
Which value gets the beat
In 4/4 the quarter note gets the beat, so the middle row of that table is your reference point: one quarter, one beat. Everything else is measured from it.
- A half note is two beats. You play once and hold through the second beat, still counting it.
- A whole note is four beats — a whole bar of 4/4, which is exactly why it is called that.
- An eighth note is half a beat, so two of them fit in one. This is where counting stops being just numbers and starts needing the &.
- A sixteenth note is a quarter of a beat, so four fit in one — and that is a topic of its own, in Sixteenth Rhythms.
Notice that the note tells you how long, and the time signature tells you which length gets called a beat. Those are two different jobs, and mixing them up is the source of most confusion about why a half note is not always two of anything in particular.
Holding is not waiting
On a keyboard or a wind instrument, a half note is a sound you sustain. On most percussion it is not — a snare hit stops when it stops, and you cannot make it last two beats by wanting it to.
So a long value on a drum part is really an instruction about when the next thing happens. You still count all four beats of a whole note. What changes is that you play on one of them and keep your place through the other three, which is a skill and not a rest from working.
The percussion version of the rule
Long note, short note and rest all mean the same thing to your hands: attack here, and not until here. The difference lives in the counting, which is why counting out loud is not a beginner's crutch — it is the part of the job the instrument does not do for you.
Turn the symbol into a percussion action
Reading the name is only the first layer. On most percussion instruments, the sound of a stroke does not last as long as a written half or whole note. The performer still has to keep the pulse alive internally and place the next attack at the written time.
- Name it. Say the note or rest value without starting at the shortest value and counting upward.
- Count it. Speak every beat and subdivision covered by the symbol, including the silent part.
- Play it. Strike only where the notation calls for an attack. Keep the counting and pulse going when the instrument is silent.
One-bar percussion check
Choose an unseen bar of 4/4 containing one long value, one rest and one pair of subdivisions. Count it once without playing, then play it on a pad while continuing to count aloud. A correct symbol name does not cover an early entrance after a rest, and a steady performance does not cover a guessed symbol name. Record the two pieces separately.
Let the evidence choose the next move
This is a decision point, not a finish line. Use one unseen example before giving a reminder, then respond to the error that actually appears.
- Whole and half rests are reversed: return to the staff line and compare only those two shapes. Keep the beat task out of the way until the visual distinction is stable.
- The symbol is named correctly, but the pulse disappears during silence: keep the pattern and add an audible count or foot pulse. Remove that support on the next example.
- The familiar example works, but a changed bar does not: vary the order, location of the rest or instrument. Do not add faster subdivisions yet.
- The changed bar is accurate with no prompt: extend to a dotted value, tie or a time signature with a different beat unit. That is a new condition, not proof that the entire topic is mastered.
Evidence boundary: one correct bar shows immediate performance under that bar's conditions. It does not establish durable retention or transfer to every percussion part.
Check later: at the start of another rehearsal, before the poster or drill is visible, use a new bar and record whether the value names, silent pulse and next attack are available with less support.
Why the lesson is built this way
The evidence base is broader than this one percussion lesson, so these sources support the design decisions rather than prove that this exact page causes learning.
- Retrieve instead of only rereading: repeated retrieval produced stronger delayed recall than repeated study in Karpicke and Roediger's experiment. That supports asking for an unseen value before showing the chart. Read the study record.
- Return after time has passed: in a music-skill experiment, practice sessions separated by 24 hours showed an accuracy benefit at the next session that shorter gaps did not show. That supports the later rehearsal check instead of treating today's exit response as retention. Read the study record.
- Change the performance condition: a music-practice pilot found that practice variability affected motor learning and retention, with results depending on the learner and task. That supports using changed notation and orchestration while avoiding a blanket claim that variation always helps every student. Read the open-access study.
What to practice, and where it stops
The Count It drill for this topic reaches every note value on the table above, but not evenly. Quarters, eighths and sixteenths run through nine steps; whole and half notes are asked by step 10 alone. So a clean result is evidence for the top two rows only if step 10 is the round you ran — and a long history of clean rounds can still contain no whole note at all.
One thing on this page the drill does not ask: the whole rest. It fills the bar, so a measure holding one holds nothing else and there is no count to give back.
Either way the top two rows are worth ten seconds of paper: write a whole note, a half note and their rests, with the beat count under each. If you can do that from memory and say which side of the line each rest takes, the table is yours.
