Time signatures
Two numbers doing two different jobs. One of them counts; the other names a note value. Almost every problem with time signatures comes from thinking the bottom one is a speed.
Two numbers, two jobs
A time signature sits at the front of the music, once, and it is not a fraction. The two numbers are stacked because they belong together, but they are answering different questions and neither one is divided by the other.
So 4/4 says: four of them per bar, and the one being counted is a quarter note. Read it as two separate facts and it stops being arithmetic.
Say it out loud in that order
Four — quarter notes. Not “four over four”, which sounds like a fraction and invites you to divide something. Nothing here divides. The top number counts and the bottom number names.
The bottom number is a unit, not a speed
This is the one that costs people years, so it is worth being blunt about: the bottom number does not tell you how fast to play. Nothing in a time signature does. Speed comes from a tempo marking, a metronome number, or a conductor — and if none of those are present, from you.
What the bottom number does is name which written value gets called one beat. Change it and the notation changes; the counting does not.
Every one of those bars is four beats long. Count “1 2 3 4” through all three and you are right every time. If the bottom number were a speed, those bars would take different amounts of time, and they do not — a bar of 4/2 and a bar of 4/8 are the same length at the same tempo, because a beat is a beat.
Why 4/8 exists at all
If it counts the same as 4/4, why write it? Because notation is read by people, and a composer picks the unit that makes the page easiest to read for the music in it. A part full of fast subdivisions gets a smaller unit so the beams group the way the music feels. It is an editorial choice about ink, not an instruction about tempo.
Cut time, and what it actually changes
Two signatures get written as letters instead of numbers. The C means 4/4, and the C with a line through it means 2/2, which everybody calls cut time.
“Cut time means play it twice as fast” is the most common thing said about it, and it is wrong. Here is the same bar of music under both.
Four quarter notes are four quarter notes. Under C they are four beats, counted 1 2 3 4. Under cut time the half note is the beat, so those same four quarters are two beats — counted 1 & 2 &, with the numbers landing on the first and third.
What moved is where the strong beats are. That is a real and audible difference: cut time groups the bar in two rather than four, which changes how a march feels and how you phrase it. It is not a tempo instruction, and it does not make the notes shorter.
Where the confusion comes from
Cut time is usually fast — marches are written in it and marches move. So the association is real even though the rule is false. The honest version: cut time tells you to feel two beats per bar, and music that wants to be felt in two is usually quick. The speed is a habit of the repertoire, not a meaning of the symbol.
Where the bottom number stops being the beat
Everything above says the bottom number names the beat. In 6/8 that quietly stops being true, and it is worth meeting on purpose rather than being ambushed by it.
The bottom number still names the eighth, and six of them still fill the bar, so the signature is telling the truth about what is written. But nobody conducts 6/8 in six. At any normal tempo it is felt in two, and each of those beats is a dotted quarter — three eighths long.
So the precise statement is the one to carry: the bottom number names the unit the bar is measured in. Often that unit is also the beat. In compound meters it is not, and the beaming tells you — those two groups of three are the notation showing you where the beats are.
Simple and compound, in one line
If the beat divides into two, the meter is simple — 2/4, 3/4, 4/4. If it divides into three, it is compound — 6/8, 9/8, 12/8. That is the whole distinction, and it is about how the beat splits rather than about the numbers themselves.
Why this matters at a drum
On a pitched instrument a wrong reading of the meter usually still sounds like something. On percussion it is more exposed, because your part is often the thing everybody else is locking to.
- Your counting syllables attach to the unit. “1 e & a” counts sixteenths against a quarter-note beat. Move the beat to a half note and the same syllables now cover twice as much music, which is exactly why counting cut time out loud feels strange the first few times.
- The beaming is doing you a favor. Written correctly, beams group by beat. In 6/8 that means threes; in 4/4 it means the four quarters stay visible. A part that looks confusing to read is often a part where the beaming and the signature disagree.
- A meter change mid-piece changes the unit, not the pulse. Most of the time a composer intends the beat to carry across — look for a marking that says so before assuming anything moved.
The check that catches the mistake
Play a bar, then play the same bar under a different bottom number at the same tempo. If it came out different, you changed something the signature never asked you to change. This is the single fastest way to find out whether you are reading the number or reacting to it.
What to practice, and where it stops

The other check needs nothing but paper. Write, in your own words and using no numerals at all, what the bottom number tells you. If the sentence contains the word fast, this page has not landed yet — and finding that out on paper is a great deal cheaper than finding it out in a rehearsal.
