Rhythms in three
Three beats in a bar instead of four, each one still splitting in two. Almost nothing about reading changes — but the count runs out a beat sooner than your hands expect, and that is enough to lose a piece.
Count to three, and mean it
A bar of 3/4 holds three quarter-note beats. Split each one and you get 1 & 2 & 3 & — the same alternation you already count in four, stopped one beat early.
That sounds like the smallest possible change and it is the reason this topic needs a page. Counting to four is a habit, not a decision, and habits do not notice the bar line. A player who has spent two years in 4/4 will count a bar of three correctly out loud and still put their hands where a fourth beat would have been.
So the first thing to practice is the count itself, out loud, before anything is played. Here is one beat of the bar split, in each of the three positions it can be in.
The sticking there is one common system, not a rule: right hand on every beat, left hand on every &. It is worth learning because it makes the hand you are on tell you where you are in the bar, which is a second check on the count. Alternating sticking works too, and plenty of players use it — but then your hands stop telling you anything about the beat.
The check that catches the habit
Count a bar of three out loud, alone, with no metronome and no sticks, four times in a row. If you get to the end of the fourth bar and your voice wants one more beat, the habit is still there. It is a strange thing to practice and it takes about ninety seconds.
A beat that starts with a rest still has a number
Put an eighth rest on a downbeat and the note lands on the & instead. That is syncopation, and in a bar of three it is where the count usually breaks.
Look at what the counts do. (1) & 2 3 still starts at one. The beat is there; you are simply not playing on it. Write it in parentheses, say it out loud, and the bar stays three beats long.
The failure mode is quiet and it is not a wrong note. A player stops saying the number they are not playing, then stops feeling it, and two bars later the measure has become shorter than it is. Nothing sounds wrong until the entrance after it.
Say the number you are not playing
This is the whole technique and it costs nothing. Out loud, on a syncopated bar, say every number including the silent ones — “one, and, two, three” with the one silent in your hands and spoken in your mouth. When the bar is solid you can stop saying it. Before then, saying it is the only thing holding the beat in place.
If eighth rests inside a beat are new, Notes & Rests is about what a rest actually is: a duration, not an absence. That distinction is exactly what makes a silent beat still a beat.
3/4 and 3/8 are two spellings of the same thing
Both have three beats in a bar. The only difference is which written value carries one of them: a quarter note in 3/4, an eighth note in 3/8. That is what the bottom number says, and it is all it says.
Every note value in the second bar is half of what it is in the first, and the two bars sound identical. That is the point, and it catches people out: the values are relative to the beat, never absolute. A sixteenth note is not fast; it is a quarter of whatever the beat is worth in the meter you are in.

3/8 is not “3/4 but faster”
Nothing in a time signature is a speed. A piece in 3/8 may well be fast, and a piece in 3/4 may well be slow, but that comes from the tempo marking rather than from the 8 — see Tempo Terms for the part of the page that actually does say how fast to go.
The beams tell you where the beats are
There is one place the two spellings really do look different, and it is worth recognizing on sight.
In 3/4 the beam groups the eighths by beat, so three pairs means three beats. In 3/8 the whole bar beams as one group, because at that level the measure itself is the unit — a fast 3/8 is often felt as one pulse per bar rather than three.
Well-engraved music does this on purpose, which makes beaming a reading aid rather than a decoration. When a bar looks confusing, one of the first things to check is whether the beams and the time signature agree about where the beats are; when they disagree, the beaming is usually telling you something the signature alone does not.
Felt in one is a useful destination and a bad starting point. Count in three — 1 & 2 & 3 & — until the rhythm is solid, and only then let it flow into one. Starting in one means you have nothing to fall back on when a bar gets complicated.
What to practice, and where it stops
Count It read 4/4 and nothing else until 2026, so for a long time there was nothing in the shop to read a bar of three against. It reads 3/4 and 3/8 now, and the Rhythms in Three sequence is six assignable rounds — three in 3/4, then three in 3/8, where the eighth note takes the beat.
One thing it still cannot do, and it is the thing this page is about: a round is set in one meter, so the app can check 3/4 and 3/8 separately and never side by side. Assign the two capstone steps together if you want a student to meet both spellings cold in one sitting.
What that leaves is a metronome and about two minutes, which is genuinely enough. Set the click on the beat and count three bars out loud, no sticks. Then play quarters. Then split one beat and keep counting. Then put a rest on a downbeat and say the number anyway. If the number survives the rest, you have this.
The other half is reading, and it needs a page rather than a pad. Take any bar of three, write the count under every note before you play it, and check that it reaches three and stops. A count that runs to four on paper is the same error as a count that runs to four in your hands, and paper is a much cheaper place to find it.
Once bars of three are comfortable, Triplets & Duplets is the next thing that looks like three and is not: three notes inside one beat, rather than three beats inside a bar. Keeping those two apart is easier once this one is solid.
